What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the process of using the natural phenomenon of hypnosis, in an intelligent and directed way, to help people obtain whatever beneficial results they desire.
Specific suggestions are given to the client while in a hypnotic state for the purpose of removal of unwanted behaviors, thoughts, or feelings, or for the creation of desired behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. The suggestions are thought out and agreed on with the practitioner before the hypnotherapy begins.
Hypnosis works with the subconscious mind, where habits and patterned behavior reside. As a result, hypnotherapy works extremely well for habit and pattern change.
What is trance?
Trance is a common and naturally occurring state of heightened focus in human beings. A hypnotic state is a trance state, and a trance state is a hypnotic state. The word hypnosis is sometimes reserved to refer to the formal process of one person leading another person or group of people into a trance, whereas the word trance can refer to either a formal hypnotic trance, or a ordinary waking trance such as daydreaming or staring into a campfire.
Who can be hypnotized?
Contrary to popular belief, almost all people can be hypnotized. And even though nearly everyone can be hypnotized, nobody can be hypnotized against their will. There are several factors which influence the efficacy of the hypnosis and the therapeutic process:
- The client’s level of comfort with the hypnotist (which is why it’s wise to consult with your hypnotherapist before working together).
- The client’s level of motivation to make the changes they want (if motivation is an issue, hypnotherapy can be used to increase motivation).
- The client’s current state of calm and confidence (hypnotherapy often improves both of these abilities).
- Whether the changes the client seeks are possible. The hypnotherapist will always work with the client to ensure that the changes they seek are appropriate and attainable.
If you need to move around during a hypnotherapy session, you can. It will not disturb the hypnotic state. If you wish to talk, you can do that as well.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

As mentioned, you are in complete control of yourself at all times during hypnosis. At all times you are free to accept or reject any suggestion. You have complete awareness of your ethics and morals, and you cannot be made to do anything which violates these principles. Will I cluck like a chicken?
While stage shows (hypnosis used for entertainment) often have volunteers performing comical acts or funny role-playing, a clinical hypnotist does not do these things. A stage hypnotist does hypnosis that is appropriate for entertainment, and a hypnotherapist does hypnosis that is appropriate for meeting the client’s needs. Unfortunately, legitimate stage acts also unintentionally help create a myth about hypnosis which discourages some people from seeking legitimate hypnotherapy. Will I reveal my deepest secrets?
